Is Being Rural Holding Your Technology Back?

Technology has really taken over the world, ultra fast broadband providers are now available all over the world and even in the more remote areas we are now seeing some form of internet access. In the past, if you lived in an inner-city area, you had the benefit of being able to access the latest technology. Once the technology was tested and proved to be a success, rural areas then saw the same technology introduced. There are a number of areas of engineering and technology that make the headlines daily. Even now in rural areas, there is more of a need to make sure that everyone has equal access to what is going on in the world of tech. We will now take a look at some of the areas of technology that may be a struggle in rural areas.

Television and the programs that are broadcasted have changed a lot in recent times. The quality of televisions have really benefited from this new technology that has been introduced.  Freeview satellite receiver and freeview with sky dish are both now very common additions to our technology portfolio. In rural areas, these have had often struggled as there could be reception issues which meant communities living in these areas could not benefit from this technology. Now, rural areas can now try a signal booster for home to see if this will make the signal strength better. Televisions rely on good quality reception to be able to get the most out of what the television is capable of. As satellite television gets better, so will the access that customers receive. Televisions and the quality that they produce has come so far that we now have televisions on the market that can replicate better than real-life pictures.

The internet, as we have mentioned above, is something that will continue to improve. Many of us now surf the internet on our phones. Mobile phone providers are now pushing out 5g technology which is even quicker than 4g. The coverage of 5g will grow as mobile customers start to upgrade to this new technology. Cloud storage is all part of the global expansion as we are now able to store all our data without the need to carry physical storage device. This kind of access allows us to control and access all our personal data whenever we need it. Having wireless and satellite technology is the best way for rural areas to be able to connect to modern technology.

In the past technology was focussed around inner-city areas as this is where most of the hubs were for accessing digital technology.

Satellite Internet

For rural communities, satellite internet could be the way forward as the internet is sent via the dish on the side of your house. Again, in some cases, this can be a struggle, but as coverage increases, so will the chance of getting access to the internet. Although satellite dish internet is quite new, it is very useful for areas that are remote or rural. There are many ways that the internet can be accessed, but when someone is living in a rural area, it is often much harder for them to access services like this. Cable is usually the answer in situations like this, but this can not always help in rural areas as cable needs to run an actual cable to connect to their services.

Mobile Coverage

Smartphones have now developed to such an extent that we can have access to the internet on the move i.e we can access our banking apps and search the internet whilst on the move. In rural areas, this, however, has often been problematic. Although the smart devices may work when away from a home in a rural area, when the rural area is entered, often the reception fails. In cases like this, the smart device can be rendered useless. Now, we can see real changes taking place so that the internet can be connected via satellite dish internet. Once the technology has improved, we may find that the internet can be picked up in different ways. As 5g technology is rolled out, we know for sure that the speed of the internet is improving all the time.

Cars are also going through a technological change. Cars are now making use of digital technology. We are on the brink of having driverless cars which will change the way we look at transport. Modern cars are now looking at new ways of being powered. We have seen the largest change in electric vehicles, they are being produced with a better range which means they can be used to greater distances. The problem often arises again in rural areas, as charging points for these cars may not be readily available. Again if the infrastructure is improved, then rural areas could benefit from having these zero-emissions vehicles. Although these vehicles could be charged at rural home, they may struggle to gain charge in the vehicle is used only in a rural area.

As you can see, living in a rural area can hinder the technology that you have access to. Although the situation is improving, technology can only go so far as more work is needed on the infrastructure, but once the technology companies introduce their products and services to a wider base, this will help improve the infrastructure as the demand will increase. It does not matter whether it is your car to your smart device, living in a rural area can really affect the kind of technology you have access to. Some types of technology will not be restricted by the area, as new ways are being found to connect with each other.
